I’m not the first (or last) to think of this

Not exactly ancient, but definitely over 150 years old, many colorful bojagi remind me of modernist compositions.  This one with the light brown pieces, makes me think of Eva Hesse’s work with latex: http://67.52.109.59:8080/emuseum/view/objects/asitem/id/21483
